Festival of Dussehra
The religious festivals of Dussehra and Navratri are celebrated in the various part of India with different traditions and people. Every region celebrates this festival its own way, people use to show Ramlila and reminds the legend of Ramayana (True Saga of Lord Shree Rama). On this day you can see the effigies of Ravan, Meghnad and Kumbhkaran in the mela ground. The festival of Dussehra is also called Vijayadashmi and it is celebrated with gaiety and pomp in all regions/states of India. The legends of Dussehra revolve around the victory of good (Lord Rama) over evil (Demon Ravana). |

Dussehra Mela and Navratri Puja

Legend of Dussehra
There are many legends have been associated with this festival. According to one of the famous north Indian legend, Ravana the demon king of Lanka abducted Sita-the wife of Lord Shri Ram and make her detainee. In response to this lord Shri Ram attacked Lanka with his "Vanar-Sena" (army of monkeys). After a fierce war of ten days he killed Ravana and set his wife free. the kingdom of Lanka was handed over to Vibhishana, the youngest brother and a great devotee of Lord Shri Ram and lord Shri Ram returned to Ayodhaya with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. In this way we can say that this festival represents the victory of light over darkness, good over evil.
Celebrations of Dussehra
This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and zeel.Ramleela which depicts the life of Lord Shri Ram is being organized at different places. A large crowd comes to see these Ramleela with great interest. On the tenth day dummy's of Ravana, his brother Kumbhkarana, his son Meghnath are burnt to symbolize the killing of evil present among human beings. Special Dusherra fairs are organized at different venues. A large crowd including large number of children visits these festive fairs and enjoys themselves.
In West Bengal and in some parts of Bihar & Orrisa this festival is celebrated in the form of Durga Puja. There people worship goddess Durga. The nine days before dussehra are called as Navratri these days are devoted to the goddess Shakti. |
