Hindu New Year Celebrations : Celebrated in India and Nepal
Hindu New Year Celebrations comprises of all the various New Year Traditions being followed in different parts of India. Although a major portion of North India and Gujarat celebrate the Hindu New Year, southern India follows its own dates. |

Here are some of them as follows:
Punjab : New year starts on 13th April.
Assam : New year starts on 14th or 15th of April.
Bengal : New year starts on 14th or 15th April.
Gujarat : New Year starts on Karthik Shukla Pratipada.
Kerala : New year also known as Vishu starts in the month of Medam (on the day when the Sun enters in the constellation Leo).
Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka : New Year falls on Chaitra Shuddha Prathipade.
Sikkim : New Year starts on 18th day of the 10th month of the Tibetan Lunar Calendar.
Maharashtra : New Year starts in the month of Chaitra. New Year is called Gudi Padwa.
Tamil Nadu : New year starts on 13th or 14th of April.
People light oil lamps, decorate their homes with Rangoli, visit temples and offer prayers, wake up early in the morning, clean themselves, clean their homes, dress up in new clothes and exchange New Year Gifts with friends and family members. The light festival of Diwali is also know as Hindu New Year which whose celebrations are not complete without special dishes, sweets etc. Hindu New Year is thus considered an auspicious festival to be celebrated all over India! |
