Memorial Day Celebrations
A day for the commemoration of all men and women soldiers who died in wars in the military service to the United States, the Memorial Day is observed as a Federal holiday in the country. Observed on the last Monday of May, the Memorial Day was formerly known as the Decoration Day. In the year 2009, it will be observed on May 25 and in 2010, May 31 is the date which will be observed as Memorial Day. Traditionally, the Memorial Day was observed on May 30 every year. However, to have the last weekend of the month of May extended, The day was shifted to be on the last Monday of May. This is debated and argued by many but it continues to be observed according to this rule itself. |

The history of Memorial Day dates back to 1866 when John Murray, a distinguished citizen of Waterloo, New York suggested decorating the graves of the deceased soldiers of the American Civil War as a gesture of remembrance. The same year, May 30 was observed as the Decoration Day. It was only in 1882 that the name of Memorial Day was used for this day.
On Memorial Day, the graves of all the deceased soldiers which may be from the American Civil War or the World War I are decorated with flags and flowers to pay respect to them. People go to the graves of their family members who were soldiers or not and pay respect to them. Also, a national moment of remembrance is observed on the day at 3 PM all across the nation. Also, there is another tradition followed according to which the US flag is flown at half-mast from dawn to noon.
